The University of Oxford is delighted to be hosting three talks covering

‘from antiquity to the modern world: ancient history and the big issues of today’

at Surgeon’s Hall in Edinburgh on 18 October 2017. The evening will explore how we can use ancient history to better understand modern issues in an accessible format.

The speakers will be:

Professor Nicholas Purcell, Camden Professor of Ancient History - 'Caveat emptor - prosperity and corruption'

Professor Josephine Quinn, Associate Professor in Ancient History - 'The Modern Origins of Ancient Nations'

Professor Neil McLynn, Associate Professor of Later Roman History  - "An impenetrable, physical, tall, powerful, beautiful wall': thinking about walls in the Classical world'

 

The evening will begin with a drinks reception from 5pm, giving an opportunity to meet the speakers and share the latest news from Classics here at Oxford. The series of engaging talks will then follow between 6-7pm.
