Aspects of academic recruitment
Muriel provides the template for the report of the Selection Panels for the recruitment of Associate Professors, Language Instructors and Departmental Lecturers.
Selection Panel reports are submitted to Muriel, who then liaises with the Head of Division to obtain approval to appoint the recommended candidate.
Muriel undertakes the Right to Work check, and issues the employment contract.
Supporting processes relating to Initial Periods of Office of Associate Professors
She keeps track of timetables for activities and reports required during Initial Periods of Office, and sends reminders to Faculty Board Chairs and appointees, including about the following:
Ensuring that mentors are appointed for new Associate Professors, and inviting feedback from new appointees about the mentoring support.
Meeting between Faculty Board Chair and appointee to agree research objectives for the Initial Period of Office. A statement of the objectives should be submitted to Muriel, for her to add to the appointee’s personnel file.
Annual meetings between Faculty Board Chair and appointee to review progress.
Interim and Final Reviews of progress – conducted roughly halfway through the Initial Period of Office. Muriel requests relevant reports, sends them to faculties for consideration by their Boards, receives Faculty Board recommendations, and obtains approval on behalf of the Humanities Divisional Board.

Supporting processes relating to fixed-term posts (held by Departmental Lecturers)
Manages requests for sabbatical and other types of academic leave
Muriel receives leave forms and requests for leave that have been approved by Faculty Boards, and obtains approval on behalf of the Humanities Divisional Board.
This covers the following types of leave:
Sabbatical leave, for Statutory Professors and University Lecturers (Teaching Fellow – University; Teaching Fellow – Faculty; and non-Teaching Fellow)
Dispensation from lecturing, for University Lecturers (Teaching Fellow – College)
Special paid (research) leave, e.g. in relation to an externally-funded research grant
