Future of the Tolkien Chair secured

The future of the J.R.R. Tolkien Professorship of English Literature and Language in the English Faculty has been secured, thanks to a generous endowment from the legacy of Mr and Mrs John Griffiths and the Tolkien Trust.

Professor Vincent Gillespie recently retired from the post and recruitment is now underway for the next postholder.

The prestigious Chair was established in 1980 in memory of J.R.R. Tolkien.

Alongside his renown as a writer of fiction, Professor Tolkien was a distinguished scholar at the University of Oxford, retiring from the post of Merton Professor of English Language and Literature in 1959.

The new holder of the Tolkien Chair will hold the Professorial Fellowship at Lady Margaret Hall.
