History Faculty launches new community history programme

The Faculty of History has launched an exciting new community history programme.

Launched this month at the Asian Cultural Centre in Oxford, the programme seeks to support and develop partnerships with community historians throughout Oxfordshire.

The community history programme is a new endeavour for the Faculty, with the appointment of Dr Priya Atwal as the Faculty's first (part-time) Community History Fellow. But community history is not, of course, a new area of study. There are many community history groups in the city and county, and the Faculty intends to work with and learn from them.

The Faculty says: “We are delighted that our first partnerships were with the Afrikan Caribbean Kultral Heritage Initiative, Everyday Muslim, and the Museum of Oxford. We are also grateful to the local colleagues, students, faculty members and alumni who have supported the initiative, many of whom have already been involved in community history work.

“The History Faculty is committed to supporting community history activities throughout Oxford and Oxfordshire.  We're excited to help researchers, students and members of the community to launch and develop partnerships that promote greater knowledge and understanding of all aspects of our local history.  We are determined that all community-university partnerships should be creative, fair and equal exchanges.”
