Oxford University announces the 2023-24 Terra Foundation Visiting Professor
Dr Johanna Gosse has been appointed as the 2023-24 Terra Foundation for American Art Visiting Professor in the Department of History of Art at the University of Oxford.
Dr Gosse, whose post will be generously supported by the Terra Foundation for American Art, is an Assistant Professor in Art History and Visual Culture at the University of Idaho and Executive Editor of the journal Media-N. She previously received her PhD from Bryn Mawr College and was a Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow at Columbia University.
When Dr Gosse arrives in Oxford in September 2023, she will teach an undergraduate survey of American art from the 17th century to the late 20th century and a Master's course that focuses on the diverse regions and transnational and global networks of collaboration that have shaped American art.
In addition, Dr Gosse will be a Visiting Fellow at Worcester College where she will deliver the Terra Foundation Lectures in American Art in the Spring of 2024. These lectures will be open to the wider public as well as Oxford University staff and students.

Dr Gosse is a historian of post-war art and visual culture specializing in experimental film and media. Her research is interdisciplinary and bridges art history, film and media studies, and visual studies. She is currently writing a book on queer American artist Ray Johnson, which received an Arts Writers Grant from Creative Capital, and her recent publications include Nervous Systems: Art, Systems, and Politics since the 1960s (Duke University Press, 2022).
Through the Terra Foundation Visiting Professorship, the study of American art is promoted from a global perspective at the University of Oxford and beyond. Each Visiting Professor engages in advanced research in the visual arts of the United States, delivers public lectures and organises symposia that encourage international research collaboration. They also offer courses to undergraduate and graduate students at the University of Oxford.
The Terra Foundation for American Art fosters intercultural dialogues and encourages transformative practices to expand narratives of American art.
