The University of Oxford was recognised for outstanding research and teaching this month. Oxford has come top in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2024, in addition to receiving a triple-gold rating by the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF).

Professor Dan Grimley, Head of Humanities said, ‘I am delighted to see that the University of Oxford has been recognised for its excellence in teaching and research. To be ranked first in the THE World University Rankings, in addition to being awarded a triple-gold rating by the TEF, is a testament to the outstanding research and teaching that the University delivers. I hope that this success encourages top students and researchers to consider Oxford University and the Humanities Division in the future.’

THE World University Rankings

The THE World University Rankings provides a list of the best research-intensive universities in the world. This year’s rankings included 1,904 universities from across the globe, assessing universities using performance indicators in five key areas: research environment, research quality, teaching, industry and international outlook.

Oxford, which excelled in research quality and research environment, retained its position as best university in the world, topping the rankings for an eighth consecutive year. We are the only university to have consistently come top in the rankings since its creation in 2004.

Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF)

The news was followed by the announcement that Oxford University has been awarded a triple-gold rating by the TEF. The TEF, which is run by the Office for Students, assesses universities and colleges nationally for excellence in teaching, learning and student outcomes for undergraduate students and courses.

Consisting of independent academics and students, the TEF panel rated universities and colleges using evidence submitted by higher education providers and students, as well as data from national datasets. The participating universities and colleges were awarded with an overall rating and an additional two ratings for student experience and student outcomes.

Oxford University received a triple-gold rating, the highest rating a higher education provider can be awarded. The rating recognises the university’s ‘typically outstanding’ performance in teaching and supporting its undergraduate students and courses.
