Jan-Georg Deutsch

The members of the History Faculty are very sorry to announce the death of their colleague Georg Deutsch, Associate Professor in Commonwealth History and a Fellow of St Cross College, who died in Oxford on 22 December, after having struggled against cancer for a number of months.

Georg was a highly regarded colleague, who played a major role in the development of African History within the History curriculum in Oxford. He was both a passionate and highly committed teacher, who recognized the importance of communicating the history of Africa to generations of undergraduate and postgraduate historians. He was much in demand as an engaged and charismatic tutor, and most especially as a dedicated supervisor of student theses.

Above all, however, Georg was an important and innovative historian of German East Africa/Tanzania during the colonial period and its aftermath. Focusing on issues of violence, slavery and oppression, he established an international reputation not only as a historian of the region but as a scholar whose work helped to set a new agenda of historiographical issues about the colonial era in east and southern Africa.

Georg's funeral, followed by the internment of his ashes, will be held at St Margaret's Church, Binsey Lane, Binsey, Oxford OX2 0EX, 12 January 2017, at 1.30 pm. St Cross College will hold a memorial service at a later date. Instead of flowers the family ask for donations to Asylum Welcome.
