The Trusted Source project team recently hosted a workshop at Oxford with historians from Manchester University and the National Trust, and were joined by colleagues from TORCH, the History Faculty and the Oxford Internet Institute.

The day opened with a presentation on Oxford’s numerous collaborations with the National Trust by Alice Purkiss and Oliver Cox, including the Thames Valley Country House PartnershipStory Interventions and Trusted Source. This was followed by a presentation on the various research projects and teaching partnerships between Manchester University and the National Trust’s Quarry Bank, a Georgian cotton mill in Wilmslow, Cheshire.

Historians from Manchester have been working closely with Quarry Bank for a number of years. Projects include research on the mill’s Apprentice House by Professor Hannah Barker, and most recently an ESRC CASE Studentship on the social history of the Styal estate. Research by Manchester’s Dr Ruth Colton on the work undertaken by women in the mill and in Styal village will also be displayed in an exhibition opening in early 2017, curated by Dr Colton.

The workshop was a great success. It offered all parties an insight into the diverse range of knowledge exchange and public engagement activities undertaken by both universities with the National Trust, a chance to reflect upon past experiences to identify areas for development, and highlighted numerous opportunities for future research and collaboration between all three institutions.
